How to Use PictorAI

A short manual: what to tap, what to type, what it costs - and ten recipes for the jobs people bring to the app most often.

Start here

  1. Install and sign in

    PictorAI is free to install on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Sign in with Apple once and your coins, your subscription and your history follow you to every device.

  2. Choose AI Chat or Generate

    AI Chat edits a photo you already have. Generate makes a new image from a text description. Both spend the same coin balance and save to the same History.

  3. Describe the result, not the tool

    Write the change the way you would to a person: what to change, where, and what has to stay as it is. Or tap a quick action and let the app write the instruction.

  4. Keep going, then save

    Every reply is a new version, and the chat remembers the previous ones - so 'now make it warmer' works. Save to Photos, share it, or come back to the conversation later.

Cut out a product for a listing

When you need it: You are selling something, building a price list or dropping an object into a slide, and it has to sit on a clean background.

How to do it
  1. Open AI Chat and pick the photo of the item.
  2. Tap Remove Background, or type the change yourself.
  3. Ask for the backdrop you actually need next, then save the reply.
Example prompt

Remove the background and put the bottle on a plain white backdrop with a soft shadow under it. Do not change the label.

Same person, another place

1 coin per reply

When you need it: A neutral wall behind a portrait, a different season, or the holiday photo you never got around to taking.

How to do it
  1. Open the photo in AI Chat and name the new setting.
  2. Say what must stay untouched - usually the person and their clothes.
  3. Ask for the light to match the new background, or the montage gives itself away.

Replace the background with a beach at golden hour. Keep me exactly as I am and match the light on my face to the new background.

A business headshot from a selfie

When you need it: LinkedIn, a CV, a team page or a conference bio, without booking a photographer.

How to do it
  1. Start from a sharp, front-facing photo - a good input beats any prompt.
  2. Ask for the clothes, the backdrop and the light in one message.
  3. If the face drifts, reply 'keep my face exactly as in the original' and run it again.

Remove whatever is in the way

When you need it: The photo is right, but there is a stranger, a bin, a cable or a sign in the frame.

How to do it
  1. Open the photo in AI Chat.
  2. Tap Remove People or Remove Objects, or name the thing: 'the red car on the left'.
  3. Look at the patched area and ask for a second pass if an edge looks wrong.

Remove the people in the background on the right. Keep the couple in front and the building behind them exactly as they are.

Restore an old family photo

When you need it: A print with scratches and creases, a faded scan, or a black-and-white photo you would like to see in colour.

How to do it
  1. Photograph the print in even daylight, without flash, and crop the edges away.
  2. Tap Colorize & Restore, or describe the damage yourself.
  3. Do one thing per message - first the damage, then the colour - so you can stop at the version you like.
Example prompt

Remove the scratches and creases and restore the detail, then colourise it naturally for a photo taken in the 1960s. Do not change the faces.

Put several photos into one

1 coin per reply, however many photos it holds

When you need it: Everyone is in the album but never in the same frame, or a person and a product have to appear together.

How to do it
  1. Select several photos in AI Chat before you send the message.
  2. Say who or what comes from which photo, and where each one goes.
  3. Fix the scale and the shadows in the next messages.
Example prompt

Put the person from the first photo next to the person from the second, on the sofa from the third. Same lighting for both, natural shadows on the floor.

Restyle a photo

1 coin per reply

When you need it: A gift, an avatar, a poster, or a picture you want to post without posting your actual face.

How to do it
  1. Open the photo in AI Chat.
  2. Tap Studio Ghibli Style, Anime Style, Make Vintage or Black & White.
  3. Steer the result with words: 'keep the faces recognisable', 'warmer palette', 'less contrast'.

Generate an image from nothing

1 coin Fast, 2 Normal, 5 Ultra, per image

When you need it: There is no photo to start from: a scene for a post, a header, an illustration, a wallpaper.

How to do it
  1. Open Generate and write the subject, the setting, the light and the framing.
  2. Pick a mode - Fast for drafts, Normal for everyday, Ultra when it has to hold up close - and an aspect ratio: square for a feed, portrait for a story, landscape for a header.
  3. Ask for up to four variants at once (Ultra makes one), then open the best one in AI Chat to refine it.

Sketch a logo for a brand

2 coins in Normal, 5 in Ultra, per variant

When you need it: You need directions to show a client, a co-founder or a designer - a starting point, not a finished identity.

How to do it
  1. In Generate, describe the brand: the name, what it does, the feeling, and the shapes to avoid.
  2. Ask for a flat vector mark on a plain background, square ratio, and leave the lettering out - image models still spell unreliably.
  3. Generate several variants, then take the closest one into AI Chat to change colours or simplify it.

See a tattoo before you book it

1 coin per chat reply, 1-5 coins per generated design

When you need it: You have an idea and want to know how it sits on your own arm, at that size, in that spot.

How to do it
  1. Generate the design first: motif, style, level of detail, black and grey or colour.
  2. Then open a photo of the place on your body in AI Chat and ask for the design on it.
  3. Try two or three sizes and placements, and bring the images to your artist.

Put a fine-line geometric wolf in black ink on my right forearm, following the curve of the arm, with realistic skin tone and shadows.

Writing prompts that work

  • Name three things: the subject, the change, and what must stay. 'Swap the background for a park, keep my jacket and my hair.'
  • One change per message. Three at once is where results start to wander, and each reply costs the same single coin either way.
  • Describe light instead of filters: 'soft window light from the left' beats 'make it look better'.
  • Say what you do not want - 'no text, no watermark, no extra people' - the model takes that as an instruction too.
  • Draft in Fast, finish in Ultra: find the wording at 1 coin, then run the winning prompt in a higher mode.
  • Keep one conversation per photo. The chat remembers earlier versions, so 'now make it warmer' refers to the last image, not the original.

When the result is not what you wanted

Nothing seems to have changed

The instruction was probably too general. Name the object and the change - 'remove the grey car on the left', not 'clean it up' - and send it again.

The face came back different

Add 'keep the face exactly as in the original', start from a sharper, front-facing photo, and ask for one change at a time. Chat edits on PRO and MAX use the higher-quality model, which holds a likeness better.

The request was refused

Google's image models block some requests outright - explicit content, real public figures, and images that could mislead. Rephrasing the idea usually helps; a refusal is answered by the service, so it still counts as an attempt.

The text in the image is misspelled

Image models are unreliable at lettering. Ask for the design without any words and add the text in a design tool, or generate several variants and pick the one that spelled it correctly.

What is PictorAI?

PictorAI is an AI chat photo editor and image generator for iPhone, iPad and Mac. You edit a photo by typing what you want changed, and you can also create realistic photos, logo concepts and tattoo designs from a text description. It runs on Google's Gemini image models.

How does editing photos by chat work?

Pick a photo from your library, then type the change as a message: 'remove the background', 'make it evening', 'put me on a beach'. The edited photo comes back as a reply, and you can keep asking for changes in the same conversation. You can also select several photos and ask the app to combine them, or tap a one-tap quick action such as Remove Background, Remove People, Fix Imperfections or Studio Ghibli Style. Conversations are saved, so you can come back to an edit later.

I have never used an AI photo editor. Where do I start?

Open AI Chat, pick any photo and tap one of the quick actions - Remove Background, Brighten Image or Studio Ghibli Style. You see what the app does for 1 coin before you write a single prompt. After that, type your own change as a message. The manual above walks through the first four steps and then gives ten ready-made recipes, from cutting out a product to restoring an old family photo.

The result is not what I asked for. What do I do?

Reply in the same conversation instead of starting over - the chat remembers the previous version. Name the object and the change precisely, ask for one change per message, and add what has to stay untouched, for example 'keep my face exactly as in the original'. If the face drifts, start from a sharper front-facing photo. If words in the image are misspelled, ask for the design without lettering; image models are unreliable at spelling. The manual above has a section on this.

How much does a chat edit cost?

Each message that produces an image costs 1 coin. On PRO and MAX it comes out of the daily allowance first and only uses coins once the allowance is spent.

Is PictorAI free?

Installing the app is free. Images and edits are paid for with coins: you can buy a coin pack, collect free coins every day you open the app (up to 62 a week), or earn 30 coins once by sharing the app. Starting a PRO trial adds 25 bonus coins to your balance. Nothing renews or charges without a subscription.

How do Coins work?

Coins are the currency for images and edits. 1 coin = a chat edit or a Fast Mode image, 2 coins = Normal Mode, 5 coins = Ultra Mode. Ultra at 2K resolution costs double (10 coins) and is available on MAX.

How does the daily bonus work?

Open PictorAI on consecutive days and it adds free coins to your balance: 2, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 25 coins for days 1 to 7 - 62 coins for a full week. After day 7 the cycle starts again from day 1, and a missed day restarts it too. Days follow your own time zone, and the bonus is paid once a day per account, on whichever device you open first. It is available to everyone, with or without a subscription. The Daily bonus row in Profile (Settings on the Mac) shows your streak, and an optional evening reminder nudges you on the days you haven't opened the app yet.

What are the subscription plans?

PRO includes 25 generations per day, the higher-quality PRO chat model, all premium styles and a one-time bonus of 25 coins when you start a trial. MAX includes 50 generations per day, everything in PRO, Ultra Mode at 2K resolution and early access to new styles and tools. Subscribers can keep spending coins past the daily allowance. Current prices for your region are shown in the App Store.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The weekly PRO plan starts with a 3-day free trial: 25 generations a day, the PRO chat model and all premium styles, plus a one-time bonus of 25 coins. Cancel in your App Store settings at least 24 hours before the trial ends and you are not charged; otherwise the weekly subscription starts at the price shown in the App Store. The yearly PRO plan and the MAX plans have no trial, and the trial can be used once per Apple ID.

Which AI models does PictorAI use?

Google's Gemini image models. Fast Mode and standard chat edits use Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image (Nano Banana 2 Lite), Normal Mode and the PRO chat lane use Gemini 3.1 Flash Image (Nano Banana 2), and Ultra Mode uses Gemini 3 Pro Image. The app no longer uses Imagen 4, which Google has retired. Models are updated on our servers as Google releases new ones. Your prompt and photos are sent to Google only to produce the image you asked for and are not used by us for advertising or profiling.

What changed when PictorAI moved to Nano Banana 2?

Every mode now runs on Google's Nano Banana 2 generation: chat edits use Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image, the PRO and MAX chat lane and Normal Mode use Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, and Ultra Mode uses Gemini 3 Pro Image, also known as Nano Banana Pro. In practice edits hold on to faces, clothes and background detail better, and a message with several conditions in it - the setting, the light, what must stay untouched - is followed more often. Coin prices did not change, and because models are swapped on our servers, the app you already have is on the current generation without an update.

How many images can I get at once, and what sizes are available?

In Generate you can ask for up to four images at a time in Fast and Normal Mode; Ultra Mode produces one image per request. Aspect ratios are square (1:1), portrait (9:16), vertical (3:4), landscape (16:9) and horizontal (4:3). Standard output is 1K. MAX adds 2K in Normal and Ultra Mode: it doubles the cost - 4 coins in Normal, 10 in Ultra - and returns one image at a time.

Which devices does PictorAI support?

PictorAI runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.1 or later, and as a native Mac app on macOS 15 or later. There is no Android version. An Android app with a similar name on Google Play is made by a different developer and is not related to us.

Do I need to buy the Mac app separately?

No. iPhone, iPad and Mac share one App Store listing, one purchase and one account. Sign in on your Mac and your subscription, coin balance, history and AI Chat conversations are already there, so an edit started on your phone can be finished on the Mac. The Mac version is a native macOS app with a sidebar, a menu bar, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop and a separate window for viewing results. It needs macOS 15 or later.

Is my data private?

Yes. PictorAI is designed as a private creative studio. There are no public feeds; your creations and chat edits are stored in your personal history and synced only to your own account. You can delete individual chats, or your whole account and all of its data, from inside the app.

Where are my images saved, and can I delete them?

Everything you generate goes to History inside the app, and chat edits stay in their conversation, so you can reopen an edit days later and keep working on it. Use Save to Photos to put an image in your photo library, or the share sheet to send it somewhere else. You can delete single images, whole conversations, or your account with all of its data from inside the app.
